Ubiquitous technology, ubiquitous education, social software, web 2.0., eLearning, ePedagogy, collaborative workspace, sharing knowledge, knowledge management, transparency, knowledge transfer, control, data-mining, surveillance culture… Some keywords that are linked to a research about transparency and surveillance in ePedagogy. This research is a project of three students of the international MA Program ePedagogy Design - Visual Knowledge Building” - and I am one of these students. So, what is this project about?
The main question of our research is the question of the boundary and the overlapping of transparency and surveillance in the field of education - especially concerning eLearning and ePedagogy. Where does transpareny end? Where does surveillance start? What are the advantages and disadvantages of transpareny in education? And who profits from this transparency? The technological development enforces the use of digital communication technologies in many parts of our western society - it becomes ubiquitous. The present trend in education is the research and the use of social software - a possibility of easily sharing knowledge, a collaborative workspace, a common kind of knowledge management.
In our research we make ourselves test objects - our whole work will be presented as transparent as possible and thus we want to find out, how this work can be traced in processes of data-mining and how we can profit from this transparency - and if/how also other people draw there profit from our work. The traces shell be visualized at the end of the project.
Next to this group work each of us concentrates on one subtopic linked to transparency and surveillance. I am going to concentrate on the question: Transparency in study organisation systems - who can see what, where, why? Are we facing changes in the study culture due to this (forced) transpareny?
